A powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale in the Aegean Sea struck Greece and Turkey at 1:51 p.m. The earthquake triggered a tsunami. Dozens of buildings collapsed in Turkey’s Izmir district, and the Greek island of Samos was also damaged.

The epicenter is in the Aegean Sea, near the Greek islands of the Dodecanese and mainland Turkey, near Izmir. The earthquake was felt on upper floors in Sofia, Plovdiv and other cities.

The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens reports 6.9 on the Richter scale. At 14:02 there was a second earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale again near the Greek islands. According to the Candilli Sendimological Observatory in Istanbul, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and occurred at a depth of 11.8 kilometers, Milliyet reported.
The Anatolian Agency reported that the epicenter was near Seferihisar (Izmir district, southwestern Turkey) and was at a depth of 16 kilometers. Videos on social media show the sea flooding the streets of the city.

Collapsed buildings in the Izmir region
The Turkish city of Sheferihisar was hit by a tsunami due to the strong earthquake. There are collapsed buildings in the city of Izmir and in the region. According to initial information, at least 20 buildings fell during the earthquake, the Anatolian Agency reported.

There are also destroyed buildings in the Bayrakli municipality in Izmir, where rescue operations have started. There, three injured people were rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building.
Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Development Murat Kurum said there were reports of five buildings collapsed in Izmir’s Bornova and Bayrakli municipalities. He said there were people buried under the rubble. The minister pointed out that a coordination center has been established for the response to the disaster in Wales.

The quake caused small cracks in buildings in the towns of Usak, Denizli, Manisa, Balakesir, Ayden and Mugla, the minister said, adding that there were no reports of casualties.
He and the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Bekir Pakdemirli, depart for Izmir on the orders of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Earlier, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish Bingol district in the eastern part of the country. It was registered by the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management at 11:48 local time (10:48 Bulgarian time). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.62 km.
