The threat was reminiscent of the deadly assault on the Capitol on January 6, when Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November presidential election was confirmed there. Five people died in the riots.

The Capitol Security Unit said yesterday that information had been received suggesting a possible plan by an identified militia to invade the Capitol on March 4. Authorities say the far-right extremists are part of a crowd of supporters of former President Donald Trump that stormed the Capitol on January 6.

The United States Department of Justice has charged more than 300 people with participating in the siege of the Capitol on January 6. Among those arrested are members of right-wing groups called Out Keepers, Three Percenters and Proud Boys. The “Oath Keepers” and the “Three Percent” are armed militias.
Reuters notes that so far there is no information from the Senate leadership on whether the session scheduled for Thursday will be canceled.
