Danish Agriculture Minister Mogens Jensen announced that he will resign after being criticized for his decision to remove all minks from the country, Politico reported, the FOCUS news agency reported.
Pressure began mounting on Jensen after it became clear that his Social Democratic government had announced a plan to slaughter 17 million minks on November 4 without the necessary legislation.
Denmark has decided to eradicate animals raised for their fur, fearing that a mutated version of the coronavirus, which passes from mink to humans, could jeopardize the efficacy of a future vaccine against COVID-19. On Tuesday, the government reached an agreement with other parties to create a retroactive legal basis for the massacre, but critics insisted that Jensen had acted unconstitutionally.
In a statement, Jensen said he was resigning because he no longer had the support of the majority of the parties in the Danish parliament. “I would like to say that it is clear here that my ministry has made a mistake in relation to the government’s decision to kill all the minks in Denmark. I apologized for that earlier. I apologize again and take responsibility,” he wrote.
