What is the usual atmosphere towards people with a Bulgarian conscience in the present Republic of North Macedonia can easily be seen in a curious judicial episode, writes the IMRO press center.
A court in Strumica recently convicted a local for beating another local. A seemingly small fight. The “small” detail, however, is that the morons come yelling “Son of a bitch, stop attacking them, Zaev, because we will hit you or we leave Macedonia.” The colorful words were recorded in the Strumica court verdict and came from the mouth of Alexander Barabanovski. The victim is Mitko Georgiev.
Who is Georgiev? A Macedonian known for his Bulgarian feelings, as well as for the two books he published in Macedonia on the Bulgarian character of the population there. Who is Barabanovski, famous for his closeness to the Macedonian Zaevi family. The verdict clearly states that he worked as a security guard for Zoran Zaev’s brother.
Such is the daily life of the shy Bulgarian man in present-day Macedonia. Mitko Georgiev will receive 150 euros for his fists. But the fists will continue. Some will lose their jobs, others will be threatened, others, like Georgiev, will be beaten. If it had been half a century ago, they would have lost their lives. In Macedonia for decades it is easy to be anyone, but not Bulgarian.
During this time, Macedonia, now ruled by the Zaevs in question, described itself as the victim of some Bulgarian harassment. And the bullying is going in a completely different direction. And it has been for decades. He was the first of the foreign colonizers within geographic Macedonia. Then his communist and all kinds of helpers. Finally, the political heirs of these helpers are the Skopje authorities.
Skopje’s current elite love their oppressors. And Zoran Zaev has a historic opportunity to show that this can change. Because the Macedonian people themselves want this change. It is up to Zaev today what he chooses. It is the freedom of self-determination that you talk about these days. Or fists to the “Bulgarians.” In the European Union, however, fists are not respected.
Where are now those who cried and criticized Bulgaria for not being European and not respecting the interests of Macedonia? Where is the Helsinki Committee that supposedly cares about human rights? Why don’t we listen to you now say what is happening with democracy and the rights of people with Bulgarian identity in Macedonia?
Many similar signals are received at IMRO headquarters describing serious violations of the rights of citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia who feel that they are Bulgarians. We will provide them publicly to the public in Bulgaria and the EU countries, as well as in PCM.
