The driver, who ran over the 2-year-old boy from “Iliyantsi” in Sofia, was admitted to hospital with a heart attack. He is in the Alexandrovska Hospital in danger of death.
The Sofia City Court had to decide whether to keep him in permanent detention after he was accused of causing wrongful death. However, the prosecutor’s office decided not to file an application for arrest in court until the driver’s health improved.
The driver is a Syrian citizen with permanent resident status. No prior violations.
“He has lived in Bulgaria since 1992, is based in the country, works, his children were born here, they graduated from Bulgarian schools,” said Anna Popova, a lawyer for the detained driver. He himself is experiencing very strong emotional pain and guilt for what happened, as this is a tragedy that has happened to both families, ”he said.
“In fact, when the accident happened, he provided first aid. He personally called 112, holding the boy with one hand, but unfortunately we know what the result is,” Popova said according to Nova.
