A gynecologist working in an artificial insemination program at a Dutch hospital became the father of at least 17 children using his own semen without informing the parents, the hospital said on Tuesday, cited by international news agencies.
Gynecologist Jan Wildschut, now deceased, worked at Sofia Hospital, now known as Isala Hospital, in the northeastern city of Zvole, between 1981 and 1993.
The hospital made the case public on behalf of the children involved.
“From a moral point of view, Isala finds it unacceptable and immoral that a gynecologist, specialist in artificial insemination with donor semen, did something like this,” the hospital said in a statement.
The case came to light after some of the adult children began searching for their biological parents on their own. DNA sample matches were found in several commercial DNA banks, as well as with a member of the doctor’s family.
The hospital said the data was compared to the DNA of a gynecologist’s legitimate son.
“During procedures in the 1980s, planned parents were advised to keep quiet about artificial insemination with donor sperm,” the hospital added, not ruling out the possibility that the gynecologist had become the parent of more. children.
The infamous reproductive medicine specialist Jan Karbaat became the father of at least 49 children between the 1980s and 1990s, in which case the intended parents were also left in the dark.
