A new panoramic glass-floored site reveals magnificent views of the Arda Valley. It is mounted on a rocky ridge overlooking the chasm in the Varhat area, near the village of Mogilitsa in Smolyan.

The new attraction was inaugurated with the performance of the Bulgarian anthem by the Rhodope singer Gergana Cholakova accompanied by the piper Christian Kovachev.

“The displacement from the site to the downstream is 351 meters, and the structure itself is 1,351 meters above sea level,” said Mogilitsa Mayor Milko Kisov. It offers views of the Snezhanka tower in Pamporovo, the Perelik peaks, Karlak, Svoboda and the nearby Kom.

The locals pride themselves on being able to show off all the beauties that tower over the rocks. The site can be reached by off-road vehicle and on foot.

The distance is 9 km,
what happens
for about 50 minutes
by car. From the three closest settlements, Mogilitsa, Arda and Gorna Arda, there are also trails. The tourist attraction was built entirely with funds from the Smolyan Municipality under the tourism program.

The floor is made of glass so that the whole mountain can be seen.

“Mogilitsa people, forest officials, enthusiasts participated in the work with volunteer work,” explained Smolyan Deputy Mayor Marin Zahariev.

“No concrete was used in the construction. It is firmly attached to rocks with anchors, special glues and resins. The steel beams have box-shaped profiles connected to each other by welding beads. It is made with a grating of beams for a path, which is solidly supported by a system of steel elements. The total length of the site is 9 meters and the free width – 1.50 meters, “says designer engineer Ivan Georgiev.

The corridor is covered with impregnated planks and special triplex glasses, which are very resistant and are used for floors. On both sides and in the front there are steel railings, 1.25 meters high, which are also reinforced to the rocks.

In practice, it can support tons of weight. Nearby there is a steel tower for the national flag, as well as railings along the ridge for the safety of tourists.

“The implementation was accompanied by a series of inconveniences and difficulties. This is due to the lack of transport accesses, rocky and steep terrain, dense bushy vegetation, which needs to be cleared in the area of the road, but without significant interventions ”, adds the construction company.

All materials are
carried by hand or with
mules to the crest of the rock
The construction was carried out in alpine conditions and the installers used alpine safety means.

“The terrain that the road passes through is very difficult as a relief. There was an old road to the area, but a new route of almost 1.5 km is being built with the help of forestry in Smilyan and Smolyan, ”says the mayor of Mogilitsa.

Observations are free. There is only one condition for
tourists – do not board
to the top in bad weather,
because a lot of thunder is falling. Signs warn not to walk on the ridge during electrical storms.

The locals transport tourists at a price of 10-15 levs per person, depending on the number of passengers.

“The kilometers are not many, but you drag yourself down the slopes slowly and the cost goes up. In addition, the car often needs to be repaired, “says Menko Verveshev from the town of Arda. He drives a jeep and his consumption sometimes reaches 40 liters per 100 kilometers.

The road to the site deviates from the Mogilitsa exit at the so-called Wide Bridge. In Mogilitsa they say that it is a Roman bridge and that there was gold buried in its foundations. The Romans used to put money in the foundations when building a bridge, so that when the bridge was damaged – have funds for its repair.

Now the bridge is a tourist attraction. Years ago it was repaired: stone railings were built with a wooden fence for the safety of passersby.

The road to the town of Borikovo is paved, and then to the Potoka district the asphalt is paved.
During socialism
the area was a lot
guarded across the border
It has passed close by, and in some places remains of the old branches still remain.

In Potok, during the years when there were border guards and the locals were about 70 people, there was a shop and a school. Now two people live in the neighborhood.

After the stream at the Tipeceto cave fork, the road to the site cannot be crossed without an off-road vehicle. The ecological routes to the Tipitseto Cave and the Sanctuary pass through the Arroyo.

Tipitseto Cave was
as a temporary shelter
during the Bronze and Iron Age. The cave is developed in marble.

The entrance is oriented to the west and has a semicircular shape. It is located at the base of a small rocky crown. The cave is 73 m long and has a displacement of half a meter.

“The research on Tipitsa was done in the 1970s, when fossil remains of a cave bear were found,” said Fedya Rushanov, president of the Mogilitsa association, which manages the cave.

After Tipitseto, the ecological trail continues southwest, passes north of the Thracian sanctuary at Rasilitsa peak and descends south to the village of Sredok.

“The villages along the Arda River attract many tourists. This summer, more than 20,000 people died despite the pandemic,” said Mayor Kisov.
One of the area’s biggest attractions is the caves, including the Uhlovitsa Underground Palace, 2 km from neighboring Koshnitsa. Included in the 100 national tourist sites, Uhlovitsa is one of the richest types of caves in Bulgaria.

The cave has a cliff room and ends with 4 lakes, which are filled with water at the spring. The stone streams of the Brilliant Cascade descend into the largest lake. There are more than 20 caves in the area, and eco-trails have been made to the springs of the Arda river and campsites along the river according to various projects.

The path to the springs of the Arda River continues through Mogilitsa. The village is famous for the Agushev mansions. They were built in 1834 and their construction lasted 20 years. The accommodations are a complex of 3 buildings, surrounded by a common wall and a tower. All buildings have a separate courtyard and a total of 221 windows, 86 doors, and 24 fireplaces.
