Police in the German city of Essen have launched an investigation into the murder of a doctor suspected of killing two seriously ill COVID-19 patients by lethal injection, Reuters reported.
The 44-year-old doctor has worked at Essen University Hospital since February. He is suspected of killing two men, aged 47 and 50, who were in the intensive care unit in very serious condition after being infected by the virus. The doctor was arrested Wednesday and confessed to a murder, saying he wanted to save the patient and his family from suffering, BTA reported.
According to German media, the doctor informed the patients’ relatives before administering the lethal injection.
According to a court ruling last year in Germany, sick patients can ask for help to end their lives, but it is not clear if this was the situation for which the doctor was detained.
Essen University Hospital said the doctor had been suspended and was assisting the police in the investigation.
