A 30-year-old man appeared in court yesterday, accused of assaulting a policeman, who subsequently suffered severe burns.

Bulgarian citizen Blagovest Hadjigeorgiev, without permanent residence, was charged with intentional serious bodily injury to Darrell Mares and arson with the intent to endanger his life.

The incident occurred outside a school in Newquay. The officer suffered severe burns to his arms and legs and was taken to the hospital with “life-threatening injuries” while trying to deal with a man who had acted aggressively near Newquay Tretherras School on Friday morning around 10.20 a.m. It later became clear that the incident was not related to the school anyway.

The Bulgarian defendant was also charged with intentionally attempting serious bodily injury against a second police officer, Alan Lenton, who was unharmed.

Darrell Mares, 51, of New York, suffered severe burns to his body, prompting him to be airlifted to Treliske Hospital in Truro for treatment.

The defendant appeared before the Truro trial court and was placed in pre-trial detention to appear before a judge in the city’s Royal Court on October 13.

Mares has been transferred to Derryford Hospital in Plymouth, where his condition is “stable” yesterday, and police chiefs say he is “sitting in a good mood”.
