A 22-year-old man living in Germany is accused of desecrating the flag of the Republic of Bulgaria, announced the Berkovitsa District Prosecutor’s Office. HN is accused of a crime committed by him under art. 108, para. 2 of the Penal Code.

Violating the integrity of the flag of the Republic of Bulgaria, the defendant N. desecrated one of the symbols of the state. For this crime the law provides for a “prison” sentence of up to two years or a fine of up to 3,000 lev.

There is a Public Support Center in the Rakovitsa neighborhood of Berkovitsa, where vulnerable groups and families receive support. The center offers individual consultations and group classes. Maintenance and repair work on the building was carried out with funds from the state delegated budget.

On October 8, 2019, the national flag of the Republic of Bulgaria was installed on the facade of the Center. Its stitching was specially ordered in view of the large size: 210 cm by 600 cm.

Two weeks later, on October 22, 2019, Center staff discovered that the Bulgarian flag was broken and attempts were made to dismantle it. Images from nearby video cameras were seen.

The perpetrator has been identified: HN, twenty-two years old, born in Berkovitsa, residing in Germany.

There is evidence that on the night of October 21, 2019, HN met with friends in the meadow, in the “Rakovitsa” neighborhood of the town, where he was drinking. They left after midnight, driving down the main street on May Day. Passing the Public Support Center building, the defendant deviated from the others and turned to her. He tore the Bulgarian flag hanging on the facade with his hands, while speaking angrily in German.. To his friend’s observation that there were cameras around that apparently had recorded him, N. replied that “it already happened“.

During interrogation, the man stated that he repented and explained that he was drunk.
