The World Health Organization, which asks Beijing to join the investigations into the origin of the new coronavirus, said today that it was of natural origin.

The assessment comes at a time when the President of the United States, Donald Trump, linked the virus to a Chinese laboratory, the BTA reported. Departing from Wuhan in China in December, the pandemic has infected 3.2 million people worldwide, with at least 230,000 people dead.
“As for the origin of the Wuhan virus, we have heard from many scientists who have investigated the virus and assured us that it is naturally occurring,” said Michael Ryan, director of WHO’s emergency response programs.
“The important thing is to find the natural host for this virus,” he added. The expert stated that the main objective was “to make us understand the virus well, understand the transmission from animal to human and understand what the barrier has been between animal and human species.” The purpose of this study is to develop public health and prevention measures so that the same is not repeated anywhere, the expert said.
The WHO has so far praised Beijing for its forensic crisis management. The organization has contacted the Chinese authorities today to invite them to participate in ongoing or planned investigations into the animal origin of the virus. The call comes at a time when the United States is sharply criticizing global health authorities, accusing the WHO of being late for its pandemic warning for not angering Beijing.
WHO chief Tedros Adanom Gebraeusus again defended his organization’s actions today, stressing that he himself was in China on January 28 to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and negotiate a visa on the spot with an international team of scientists. Hebraeusus said that people advised him not to go to China because he did not know what the behavior of the virus was, but he himself was not afraid to go there. On January 30, the WHO declared a global emergency due to a coronavirus after refusing to do so on January 23.
