The United Kingdom, the second country most affected in Europe by a new coronavirus with 26,711 deaths, has passed the epidemic, world agencies reported. This was stated by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at his first press conference after recovering from COVID-19 and after his fiancé had a son, Reuters added.

“I can confirm for the first time today that we have passed the peak of this disease. We have passed the peak and now we are down and we have many reasons to have lasting hope, “he said.

He explained that it was now important not to lose control of the situation. Johnson said that next week and in the coming weeks, government officials will say how and when unlock different parts of the economy and will provide a roadmap for options in that direction, Reuters reported.

The exact dates of each change will be based on scientists’ recommendations and data on the epidemic.

Johnson cautioned that allowing a second wave of contagion in the country was vital.

However, a survey by Ipsos Mori shows that about two-thirds of Britons believe that the government took too long to implement the measures by strict social exclusion to reduce the spread of the new coronavirus, DPA reported.

The survey involved 1,000 people. 66 percent of them considered government action too late. Two weeks ago, 57 percent of respondents expressed a similar opinion.
