Svetlin Zhelev is editor-in-chief of Bulgaria’s largest technology website kaldata.com, as well as an expert in this field. He interviewed Maritza about the introduction of 5G technology under debate, both about its benefits and about the fears and rumors surrounding its application. He also linked technology to the fatal accident in which Milen Tsvetkov died.
– Let’s start with the question of the difference between 5G and 4G.
– This is the fifth generation of mobile telecommunications networks. The theme is quite broad, and behind the two characters there are many different technologies that will combine in a way that will allow us, over the years, to take advantage of a number of things that we have only seen in fantasy movies today. .
The division of technology generations is actually only conditional. The first was that in the 1990s in Bulgaria we were allowed to talk on the phone wherever we were (cell phone).
The second one already allowed us to send SMS messages through the same channel, the third one appeared for the first time on the Internet on a phone, but at low speed, and in the fourth – 4G, which we use today, we already have a smartphone in our pocket , that we have access to literally all the information in the world.
A few years ago, we couldn’t even imagine how imperceptible the “future” would be. Today we have a connection with all our friends in a second, we work on the go, 4G helps many professionals and makes the connection between us much easier. For me, this is why 5G and even the sentiment against it spread so easily: We are all connected around the world.
On the one hand, it is not a matter of revolution in our radio spectrum to the point of launching something that is not present at the moment. On the other hand, the optimizations, the more complete use of frequency bands, and the technologies that some of the greatest minds of our time have put their efforts into, can change our lives for the better.

– How much faster and bigger will the new technology allow?
– Each successive generation is really characterized by higher speed. Things are getting faster. We are certainly talking about much higher speeds, generally 10 to 100 times higher than what we are using now. The range that I mention is very large because the new generation of networks is not something that we will awaken one day.
Things will evolve over the years and, for the moment, boutique solutions with theoretical speeds have been demonstrated. Currently, there are many 5G networks in operation around the world, on the basis of which speeds 20-30 times faster can be given as a more specific response.
Since 5G is something that encompasses many different technologies, speed is just one of the benefits. For me, network latency is much more interesting.
Adv. Markowski cites an important detail from the murder of Milen Tsvetkov so the case will end quickly.
“What is this?”
– In practice, this is the response time for our network and our device. To imagine, speed depends on bandwidth, while latency is the time that data travels between the antenna and the device. These are parts of a second, but they are very important. If you download a movie, say or use Facebook, read Maritza online, or listen to Internet radio, you won’t feel much difference.
However, precise movements cannot be made at this time, relying on wireless connectivity, no matter how high the speed. 5G will change a lot in this regard and allow many things to happen over the network that are simply impossible today. This will also help the ability to connect many more IoT devices while still serving us.
– Can we give a specific example of the benefits of 5G?
“The benefits are really so great that it will be very difficult for me to summarize them. I prefer to skip the traditional examples where we have the Internet faster, we can watch TV without even a single cable at home, play games, use virtual reality. They generally trust companies that create business networks to capture people’s interest.
However, by working in 5G networks, different companies will be able to create services that will make our world safer, that human work is easier and more efficient, that medical services are much easier to access and more.
The call. Connected cars are, for example, an important part of fifth generation networks. And it’s not about having your kids in the back seat play with other kids on the net for their favorite game, or on the bus riders to watch high-quality movies.
We are also talking about many security benefits here. There are solutions that cars can communicate with each other, avoiding collisions on their own. It is impossible not to draw an analogy with the recent tragedy with Milen Tsvetkov, in which one car struck another in a completely illogical way. 5G will allow the introduction of systems that make such tragedies extremely rare. This is because the data can be processed in a fraction of a second.
Similarly, we can see vehicles safely without the need for human control (so-called autonomous cars). Thanks to its network, its low latency and high speed they will be able to create no less solutions in agriculture, messaging services and medicine.
Currently throughout the world, even in Bulgaria, they lack medical professionals. This can be easily solved through 5G and the possibility that many things, including precision operations, can happen remotely. I know how it sounds now, but if years ago someone came and told you that you could broadcast live with a small device from anywhere in Bulgaria, and thousands of people would watch you for free, I guess it would sound like that.
– There are many posts on social media, how dangerous is 5G to the human brain? Do birds fall on antennas?
– This question sounds exactly like “Is electricity dangerous?” Or “Is the car dangerous?” I know that many people have concerns fueled by fake news, internet trolls, and non-existent “research”. A generation of telecommunications cannot be harmful to the brain per se.
Anxiety comes from the unknown. Instead of the suggestion that this is something entirely new. And it is simply a development of the old, for the most part, not to say entirely repeated in purely technological terms. All of the frequencies at which 5G will “kick in” exist right now, not many of them have been used very actively for years.
Somehow, many feel comfortable jumping on the question of how often police radio stations and military communications work. Even the BNR of what frequencies are broadcast, not to mention the Wi-Fi devices you already have in almost every home.
The plans are for 5G to use various types of frequencies, one of the reasons why it will be so effective. We can generally divide them into low frequencies (below 1 Ghz), medium (between 1 and 6 Ghz) and I think they are the ones that cause the most anxiety (between 24 and 72 Ghz). The latter are precisely the topic of greatest propaganda on the subject.
But concerns about them are unreasonable, because this matter has been repeatedly investigated and is still subject to regulation. It is well known which values are harmful, which are not, what is the power with which they can be used, etc. These standards are respected worldwide and, in the circumstances of Bulgaria, the security requirements are even higher today.
Nonsense like 5G causes Covid-19, reduced immunity, and what is crazy and easily refractory, even without technical knowledge.
Currently, some of the countries with the best developed and working 5G networks, such as South Korea, are the best for treating the virus. Others like Iran and Turkey, which lack 5G, are among the most affected. However, due to people’s fears, even the WHO issued a formal opinion on the matter. And for birds, there is not a single bird that has died from it. There is simply no such case. All of that news is a complete lie and has been denied immediately.
We have radio radiation all the time, all kinds of waves. For years and no one has had a problem. And these are the waves that pass through our bodies. You can listen to the FM radio even if you are in the basement, because the frequencies pass through the walls. With 5G, the disturbing millimeter waves are so fragile that they are stopped by everything: walls, bushes, trees, and even human skin.
They won’t even go through us. However, people who panic combine a variety of statements without understanding them, bringing them together and creating a public 5G enemy. And with their implementation they are connected with the world’s greatest specialists. Do they not have families or do they fear for their health? Or will they go with some special costumes once 5G works?
– What are the 5G frequencies in Bulgaria compared to the current ones, what are the native standards?
– For the 5G network in Bulgaria, starting with CRC, they provided our three operators with the frequency range of 3440 to 3540 Mhz so that they could test the technology. At a European level, it has already been decided that 5G will operate at 700MHz, 3.6GHz and 26 GHz. As I pointed out previously, these frequencies are not something that has not been used until now, they are revolutionary, etc.
They are used by both mobile operators and various devices, such as radios, amateur radios, television broadcasts and, for example, Wi-Fi routers, most of which operate at 5 Ghz. Operators are currently using multiple frequencies that you can find on the CRC website: approximately 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2.6 GHz. Details are here: https://crc.bg/bg/statii/840/ razpredelenie-na-radiochestoten-spektyr-v-obhvati-900-m-hz-1800-m-hz-2100-m-hz-2- 6-g-hz-i-3-6-g-hz? “Did I read that there were movements in England and the Netherlands that triggered antennas?” Do you expect something like this in our country?
“I hope there is good thinking and things like that don’t happen. Because they are already really dangerous for health. In England, 4G antennas were turned on because some thought it was 5G. Because of this, the entire neighborhood was left without a phone and internet, and people couldn’t even call and call an ambulance.
In another case, the antennas were set on fire, specifically in the service of hospitals, which could literally kill people. And although fear of radio radiation is somewhat imaginative, it can really ruin people’s lives because of such things. Indeed, the analogy is excellent, again with England, where the looms were broken at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Maybe we still have to knit?
– When will there really be 5G in Bulgaria?
– This is a very difficult issue at this time due to the state of emergency. As I said before, we are going through the trial period, now the state is in the process of providing the frequencies for operators to use, but it will take a long time for the actual 5G to become mass. The first estimates were for 2021, but this will be the beginning. A network similar to the one that will allow my example with cars and other things from the future will take much more.
I want to summarize that 5G will actually give you many more opportunities and benefits than we even imagine at the moment. It is an evolution that will allow our development and, cliché as it may be, can make the world a “better place to live”.
The application in several areas will completely change the way they work. At the same time, there is no scientific evidence of any damage to the frequencies to be used, and its use worldwide has been subject to many regulations by public and private companies that constantly monitor this.
The analogy with electricity is excellent. Some time ago, there were people who strongly opposed him. Today we cannot imagine a world without electricity. And 5G isn’t even a revolution, it’s more like the ability to put more than one contact in our homes.
