Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz intentionally instilled fear in citizens because they did not take the Covid-19 threat seriously. This is made clear in the minutes of the crisis staff meeting under the chancellor’s leadership, broadcast to the public radio station ORF.

To attract the attention of Austrians with shocking data and dramatic speeches, this was discussed on March 12 by members of the government, health experts and communication experts. This is made clear by a protocol sent to the public radio station ORF, which also understands Sebastian Kurtz’s words that Austrians must act with caution and fear of contagion, but not the possible food shortage caused by the pandemic.

After the chancellor’s spokesperson’s initial attempt to dismiss the protocol as false, he explained that Kurtz had not been properly cited. According to him, the chancellor understood people’s fear of infection, but not the shortage of food.

In an attempt to stop the growing scandal, the Greens, a coalition partner in the government, have announced that they will publish the minutes of the meeting in question without naming the speakers.

All opposition parties have harshly criticized the behavior of Foreign Minister Kurtz. The far-right Freedom party commented that “blaming and instilling fear are key characteristics of Sebastian Kurtz’s behavior during the quarantine.”
