For 25 years after the first historic murder of a mafia boss in Bulgaria, that of the founder of the VIS combat group Vasil Iliev, the guarantors and contractors of the wet order remain unknown. The investigation into the murder of a Kyustendil fighter, whose life was shot dead on April 25, 1995, has long since been suspended and time has erased even scant and indirect evidence. The perpetrators and guarantors of the murder of the first head of insurance in Bulgaria are very likely not alive either. However, one thing is for sure: even 25 years after Vasil Iliev’s death, he remains a mythical figure, and the legends of his gangster reign are still told. Vasil Iliev’s life ends at 9.15 pm on April 25, 1995 on the rugged, narrow and illuminated Nikola Kamenov Street in the Gotse Delchev Sofia district. There, the head of the BIS insurance company, VIS, is killed by hitmen when he goes to his Mirage restaurant for a late dinner with showman Slavi Trifonov. Previously, Vasil Iliev had a meeting with a BSP party official at the Park Hotel Moscow.
On the last day of his life, the head of the fighters is happy: his personalized silver Mercedes 600 SL, registered the same day with the Traffic Police, after his close friend Fatik imported it from Germany, finally arrived in Bulgaria . Vasil Iliev has been waiting for his Mercedes for almost 3 months after ordering it for a gift to mark his 30th birthday, celebrated on January 22. He manages to travel about 30 kilometers with a single vehicle, before flying in a car covered in rain from the bullets.
The shooters are at least two. The mercenaries open a 2-3-meter silencer shot, taking advantage of the broken path, forcing Vasil Iliev to travel at about 20 km / h, followed by his three bodyguards riding in a red Seattle Toledo. The guards see nothing and don’t even respond to fire, even though they are armed. They only record the death of their boss.

During the police inspection of the crime scene, it will be reported that 17 bullets were fired at Vasil Iliev, of which 3 killed him. Two of the bullets are in his head, a third pierces his shoulder and stops at the spine.
Vasil Iliev’s murder literally shakes Bulgaria. Its execution requires an extraordinarily closed government session on emergency measures against crime. Experts predict the outbreak of a fierce gangster war, making grim predictions of impending bloody baths. In Sofia, crowds of police officers are taken to the streets out of respect, and dozens of representatives of Bohr’s insurance elite are covered for a long time. Some are hiding in Greece, others are heading to Hungary and Serbia. Slavi Trifonov gives a moving speech on television, tearfully announcing that Bulgaria has lost one of its most worthy sons, referring to the murder of Vasil Iliev.
The VIS founder’s funeral took place on April 27, 1995 in Kyustendil, with Vasil Iliev buried in a crowded mourning procession. The one kilometer column of black men with dark glasses and cut-out necks is located in the central Kyustendil street, Tsar Osvoboditel. Eyewitnesses recall that more than 15,000 people send Vasko Fighter on his last earth journey. The ceremony in the center of Kyustendil is personally authorized by the mayor, and almost the entire city is on the sidewalks to observe the procession in silence.
More than 500 Sofia cars, full of “insurance agents”, come to Kyustendil. The body of the deceased is carried in a black Dodge, escorted by two limousines. The coffin is carried by Vasil Iliev’s closest associates, and among them are Kosio Samokovets and Dimitar Dimitrov, the monkey. Years later, they both died in a custom murder attempt.
Dozens of athletes are present at the funeral, including the heroes of the ’94 United States Hristo Stoichkov, Lyubo Penev, Jordan Lechkov, Trifon Ivanov, Borislav Mihailov, Ilian Kiryakov, Bozhidar Iskrenov, and others. The stars of the show are also missing, as are the venerable competitive bosses. At the funeral, the crowns are served by all the heads of the rival CEC group, led by brothers Krasimir and Nikolai Marinovi – Margins. The only absent is Mladen Mihalev – Maggio, who at the time was in a Sofia hospital.
A few days after the murder of Vasil Iliev by the mafia, a student at the 73rd school in Sofia discovers one of the weapons used in the execution. A Croatian-made Zaggy machine gun without an identification number was thrown near a tree in the area. This leads criminals to believe that the killers are from Serbia or Croatia.
Until today, the version that Vasil Iliev was liquidated by Serbian mercenaries has been considered valid both in hiding and among the main criminals of the Interior Ministry. No evidence has been found, but according to information received weeks after the execution, the order passes through Sikagiya Milcho Bonev – Bay Mile.
During this period, the Bile Mile smuggled fuels from Bulgaria to the Serbian embargo on railroad tracks. Vasil Iliev is also entering this business. The whiskeys are alleged to be hijacking an entire composition of the Bile Mile train and seizing the Strezimirovtsi border checkpoint through which the SIC’s oil smuggling caravans cannot pass. According to operational signals received at the Home Office in 1995, the Serbian mafia boss Sretan Josic is a Baj Mile partner in this business. It is through Joc Amsterdam that a wet order passes, filled with Serbs or Croats. During this period, VIS and PEC also struggled along the lines of “forced” insurance, the two groups everywhere forcing employers passing in Bulgaria to pay them for their safety.
The version that Vasil Iliev’s murder was sealed with the PEC was so widespread in the first months of the investigation that it was necessary for Krasimir Marinov, the Great Margin, to give an interview to refute it.
“We have been friends with Vasil since 1979, we know each other from sports and barracks. Although we have been competitors in recent years, we have always maintained a friendly relationship. I will not allow the two groups SIK and VIS to face each other,” announced Big Margin in an interview with Standard.
The Visagi are also searching in vain for who is responsible for killing the chief. Meto Ilienski and Chavdar Pisarski announce an underground information award and investigative police are encouraged. People close to Vasil Iliev even go to Vanga with lists of suspect names, and the delegation is led by the late banker Emil Kyulev.
