The two neighboring countries imposed a 14-day quarantine on all people crossing the border, but Germany eased this requirement for cross-border workers. So far, Poland has not, according to the Polish agency PAP, cited by BTA.

They held up banners with the words “Let’s go in and work without quarantine”, a hundred people from the Polish side of the border and even more from the German demonstrated near the Rosowek-Rosow border checkpoint,

There are similar protests in other border cities, such as Gubin and Guben, as well as in Zgorzelec and Görlitz.

German hospitals in the border area are hiring many Polish doctors and nurses who cannot access their jobs, explained one of the organizers of the protest on the German side of the border, Marta Schuster.

Schools in Poland will be closed until May 24

According to Eurostat data for 2018, 125,000 Poles operating in Germany form the largest cross-border contingent in the EU. In recent weeks, some German regions have been trying to encourage Polish workers not to return to their homes by offering them compensation of € 65 per day.

There were not many protests on the Polish-Czech border, for example in the Polish village of Chalupki.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawetski acknowledged that the dilemma is difficult to resolve and explained that some residents of the affected regions are concerned about the higher level of coronavirus infection at the border.

“I will look for a good compromise,” Moravetsky promised, saying he would speak to regional authorities to find solutions that free cross-border workers from quarantine requirements, but also guarantee sufficient distance measures to protect other people there.
