Liverpool will surely be the new champion of England. And the last doubt about that was removed after yesterday’s decisions made by the UEFA Executive Committee. UEFA stresses that classification in these cases must be based on the “controversial merit” principle during the season. There are already several options for this principle: the playoffs, declaring the final round final play, or ranking based on the average points scored per team game.
According to the English Premier League media, they believe that the last option would be the fairest if the championship could not be completed.
What would the classification be like if this system were used? Liverpool, of course, will be the champion, which is more than logical given the 25-point advantage over Manchester City, which remains in second place. Leicester and Chelsea will finish third and fourth, which means they will play in the Champions League.
Manchester United will also be able to do so if Manchester City’s penalty continues, as the Red Devils retain their fifth place. Otherwise, Man United and Sheffield United will certainly play in the Europa League.
Wolverhampton could become the third English team in the event if the FA Cup did not end either (b. Or the final winner has already won a European quota through its ranking).
Arsenal and Tottenham London remain outside Europe. However, there is a hypothetical possibility that the “gunners”, who will finish eighth in accordance with the aforementioned methodology, take the third English quota for the Europa League.
