Sweden’s leading epidemiologist says that up to 20% of Stockholm’s capital is already immune to the coronavirus, Daily Mail reported.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Anders Tegnel defended the measures taken by Sweden to combat the coronavirus. The Scandinavian country, unlike other western countries, does not block life in the country. The liberal approach, according to epidemiologist Tegel, will help Sweden deal with the second wave better than other countries.
The Swedish health expert said that blocking the state makes no sense because 50% of those killed by COVID-19 in Sweden are in nursing homes where visits have already been banned. Anders Tegnel says Swedish citizens will do better than others with the expected second wave of coronaviruses because they already have immunity. By number of infected, Sweden is far from other European countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Anders Tegnel said Sweden had passed the peak of the infection a week ago. According to him, up to 20% of Stockholm’s population is already immune. Restaurants, bars and schools remain open in Sweden, and citizens are only advised to keep a social distance and wash their hands more frequently. However, the economic forecast is not good. The contraction in the Swedish economy may be the worst recession since World War II, government forecasts today showed that the reduction in gross domestic product could reach 10 percent.
