“Let’s not count the dates and the means to track how they reach people in need”, Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov told bTV on Thursday night about questions about the bizarre Bulgarian food and vegetable trade against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) nozzle and coronavirus defenses.
On April 13, the chief of staff of the Covid-19 gene fight. Ventsislav Mutafchiyski announces the receipt of 15 tons of medical supplies from the UAE, against the 32 tons exported of Bulgarian food. The same information was officially circulated by the Cabinet, explaining that the shipment was accompanied by Karanikolov. However, on its official website, the Bulgarian Consulate in Dubai announced that the intranets exported by DPS companies to MPs Delyan Peevski and Gradus were 20 tons, not 32. The UAE shipment also turned out to be much smaller than announced and mainly of dates. According to the latest BRC data, where goods are shipped near the UAE, they are approximately 9 tonnes.
The Abu Dhabi delivery had to be weighed on Thursday, but the exact quantities and weight of the dates, masks and disinfectants shipped are not yet officially known. The value of both shipments and the destination of the exchanged products are not reported. The flights of the two planes with Bulgarian vegetables, meat and dairy products were claimed to be at the expense of both Bulgarian companies.
Karanikolov explained that the barter is the result of unprecedented trade talks that started entering the UAE market two years ago.
“Two companies from Bulgaria and one from the United Arab Emirates provided support goods in the conditions of the coronavirus, and my job was to meet with the Minister and discuss the situation with the epidemic.”said the economy minister. According to him, the UAE business was interested in the activities of Sofia Tech Park, but did not provide any details on the matter.
Karanikolov explained that his trip to Abu Dhabi was a sign that the joint work would continue.
“For two years I have been working on this Bulgarian food project to enter the UAE market”, he said when asked what his personal companions required.
“We had to demonstrate that the coronavirus cannot prevent us from dealing”added.
According to him, initially the shipment from the UAE was only from nozzles provided by the manufacturers, but they “knowing that our doctors needed safeguards and bought them with the greatest generosity”.
It was not discussed why, when it comes to a private exchange of goods, the dates are in stock at the Bulgarian Red Cross. By Karanikolov’s call not to count the dates, but to track their distribution to those most in need, it became clear that the companies that provided the dates would give them to charity.
What will be the beginning is not clear, and how the nozzle will remedy the situation of people in need who, for example, lack the means of bread, rice, oil and other goods that need exotic fruits.
According to NSI data on food consumption, the average consumption of dried fruits in the country is 300 grams per person in 2018. Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture for 2016 show that imports of tufa, figs, pineapples and avocados, fresh and dry, they are 4942 tons and the exports of the same products, 168 tons.
