President Rumen Radev commented for the first time on the plot of the spy scandal with Ivan Iliev’s group, declared by the prosecution as the “Resident”. Until now, the head of state has been silent on the issue, explaining on election day that questions should be directed to those in a hurry to comment before court rules.
“If the Bulgarian court confirms the breakthrough in personal security, it means that we have a deep internal problem that compromises not only our national security, but also that of our allies and severely discredits Bulgaria.“Radev said.
Investigators say Iliev led a group of spies involving his wife, Galina Ilieva, who is also a Russian citizen, as well as military intelligence officers. The prosecutor’s office released the SRS from their conversations, as well as from images showing military ministry employees taking pictures of their on-duty monitors. According to investigators, they filmed secret documents, which were later handed over to the Russian embassy. They were paid between 2 and 3 thousand BGN per month. Iliev and four other people were taken into custody. The sixth suspect was released on bail. In addition to his arrest, there was also a scandal. It turned out that the military policemen sent to arrest Iliev accidentally went for coffee. As a result, he managed to move from the center of Sofia almost to the Russian embassy, where he was still being held.
According to the president, instead of bragging about the spy scandal, you have to answer tough questions. He criticized the Council of Ministers and recalled that the services that control the protection of classified information are directly subordinate to the Prime Minister.
“Why do the senior officials of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Defense, whose inspections and admissions are issued by services directly subordinate to the Prime Minister, betray our national security? Why is it ignored that the organization and control of the classified information protection policy is carried out by the Council of Ministers“said the president.
He added that he awaits not only an investigation of the case, but also an analysis of the reasons that led to it. Radev added that the next government has a lot of work to do to restore statehood after Boyko Borissov’s rule.
