Voting abroad: Chaos and scandals in Turkey, queues in Spain, Belgium and London

Election day for Bulgarians in Turkey began with tension, chaos and scandals. Long lines formed in the Avcilar district of Istanbul due to the declarations that every voter must fill out. According to the plan, this would be done online. On Sunday morning, however, the commission decided that those who did not fill out the document beforehand should do so on the spot, but outside the section. Then the defenders arrived at the scene and a new meeting of the commission was called. The exact opposite decision was made: the statements will be completed within the section itself, BNR reported.

This caused chaos, delays, and queues, and maintaining physical distance became nearly impossible due to the crowds. Many suspected that this was being done to prevent them from voting.

Offenses

In Turkey, there are a total of 35 sections in this election. Due to the coronavirus, a curfew has been introduced in the country, which does not apply to Bulgarians.

In the city of Corlu, where one of the largest Bulgarian communities is located, there were also queues, Nova TV reported. The biggest difficulty was again the mandatory declarations.

There are numerous violations taking place in Turkey, said IMRO MEP Angel Djambazki, who was in Corlu in the morning. He explained that there is massive turmoil in Turkish, and specially selected people fill out voter statements that, according to him, do not know Bulgarian.

In one of the Eskisehir sections, a voter left the section with an open ballot and asked in Turkish where to “pitch” for the Turkish ethnic party. In Tekirdag, the activity is currently higher than in some sections of Sofia“, wrote on Facebook.

Djambazki explained that they could barely send all the rape reports to the CEC.

Several buses with voters from Kardzhali have arrived in Kardzhali, Nova TV reported. Some people received free tickets and PCR tests.

Eastern Europe

Queues of people wishing to vote formed in front of the Bulgarian representations in several Western European countries. Two sections were opened at the consulate in Barcelona, but there were still between 30 and 40 minutes to vote, bTV reported. A record number of voting requests were submitted in Spain, 7778. Turnout is expected to increase in the afternoon, likely to create congestion elsewhere, such as Madrid and Valencia.

Bulgarians in Vienna are also quite active, Nova TV reported. A total of 17 polling stations have been opened across Austria, 9 of which are in the capital. Voting requests exceed 2,000.

There are 11 sections in Belgium, BNR reported. One of the sections of Ghent, where a large Bulgarian community is concentrated, remained presided over and hours after election day awaited a decision on who would replace it.
