Turkey has registered 44,756 new coronavirus cases per day, according to the Health Ministry on Saturday. This is a record since the beginning of the pandemic, Reuters reported.

The total number of cases is 3.445 million as of Saturday, the data shows. Another 186 patients died, for a total of 32,078.

The country ranks fifth in the world in terms of morbidity.

The cases rose after the government relaxed measures to curb the pandemic in early March, reaching new all-time highs in the past five days.

On Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a tightening of the measures.

Turkey is resuming weekend lockdowns in most provinces and will also impose restrictions on the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins on April 13 this year.

Erdogan said 58 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, including Istanbul and Ankara, are now identified as “red” or “very risky” areas and will be subject to lockdowns on both Saturday and Sunday.

The night curfew will continue during the weekend in the country. The nationwide night curfew will continue, he said.

Turkey launched its vaccination program in January. So far, more than 15 million vaccinations have been carried out. About 7 million people received two doses.
