The death toll from the accident in Taiwan is increasing. According to the latest data, at least 50 people were killed in the collision between a train and a railway engineering machine.
The collision occurred exiting a tunnel. More than 150 people were injured, BTV reported.
There were nearly 500 passengers on the crowded train, many of them standing. The incident occurred around 9 am local time. The train, consisting of 8 carriages, travels from the capital Taipei to Taitung, in the southeastern part of the island.
The tragedy occurs on the first day of a long holiday weekend until Monday. According to information during the collision, the first cars derailed and the last ones were badly damaged and deformed.
Rescuers used cutters to cut the shredded leaves. The president of Taiwan demanded an immediate investigation of the case.
This is the worst rail accident in the history of the country.
