The vaccine quantities planned at the beginning of the quarter will allow for a big jump in vaccination. This was stated on Saturday by the director of “Pirogov” Prof. Asen Baltov in a briefing, which he gave in front of the emergency hospital together with the director of the Executive Agency for Medicines Bogdan Kirilov.
Starting next week, we plan to propose to include the fourth phase: the elderly and people with chronic diseases. The activity of general practitioners, who know their elderly and chronically ill patients better, will likely intensify, Baltov said.
He expressed his hope that by the end of June we would have more than 50 percent of the population vaccinated. And when we add the sick, I believe that very soon we will reach the coveted 70 percent herd immunity, the professor said.
The commitment and the commitment – before the end of this week to achieve 500,000 doses, it is already a fact, Kirilov said, adding that a report today shows that they are placed in the country. The vaccination process continues, all those who have registered through the electronic system, those who want to go through the “green corridors”, or those who are part of the implementation of the phases, may be vaccinated tomorrow.
Professor Asen Baltov stressed that vaccines are not “just pills”. You know, until yesterday there is information that 15 million doses have been discarded in the United States due to problems in the production process. Each batch of vaccines must be tested at various levels before being released for use. This is one of the reasons for the delay in orders in the first quarter, Baltov said, adding that 100,000 people in the country have already received both doses. He hopes to reach around 2.5 to 3 million by the end of June so that we can all live a little calmer and more normally.
If necessary, we are ready to perform between 20 and 25 thousand doses a day. The problem is really in the delivery, and by the time we have enough vaccines, you will see how this process will grow and become more sustainable in the next three months, said Professor Baltov.
Asked about the possibility of free choice of the vaccine, he said that the fourth phase will pass first. Currently, the only thing that is allowed, even vaccination continues, is with the AstraZeneca vaccine, there is a “green corridor”. Today, more than 70 people have been vaccinated in Pirogov alone, Baltov said.
In the next three months, Bulgaria will receive more than 3 million and 200,000 doses of RNA vaccines, said the director of the Executive Agency for Medicines, Bogdan Kirilov.
In the coming weeks and months, there will be a higher proportion of RNA vaccines than vector vaccines. 1,300,000 are part of the 10 million for which the EC managed to conclude an agreement with Pfizer / BioNtech for accelerated delivery in the second quarter. The rest will be delivered in the fourth quarter, Kirilov said. To obtain this agreement from all countries, negotiations had to be carried out both at the level of experts and at the political level, at the level of leaders, explained Bogdan Kirilov. He recalled that Bulgaria will receive about 1,300,000 additional doses of the Pfizer / BioNtech vaccine, which, according to him, happened after two weeks of difficult negotiations between the EU countries, and our national interest was protected to the maximum.
According to him, the expected amounts of RNA vaccines in the next 3 months should allow reaching a vaccination level of 50 percent of the population, which is the goal set by the EC.
Bogdan Kirilov pointed out that 1,200,000 of the vaccines are under the solidarity mechanism, according to which 19 countries have agreed that another five countries will receive in advance an amount greater than what is proportionally distributed to achieve the desired level of the EC of vaccination .
When asked why other countries had to help us and we didn’t get the amounts of vaccines without solidarity from them, Bogdan Kirilov said the main reason was late deliveries from one of the manufacturers, with more than 70 percent less than previously announced.
Bogdan Kirilov also said that the only drug with indications for the treatment of the coronavirus is “Remdesivir”, of which 18,000 vials were delivered in March, and this month the supply of as many continues so that the drug can be supplied for medical treatment. .
