One officer was killed and another injured when a car collided with a barricade in front of the United States Congress. Police opened fire and killed the suspect in the attack.
The Capitol complex went into lockdown mode shortly after 1 a.m. local time (8 p.m. Bulgarian time) Friday after a car crashed into a compound. According to authorities, after the collision the driver got out of the car and pointed a knife at the guards. Then the police opened fire.
There is no information on the identity of the driver and the motive, but it is known that the person shot was not on the radar of the authorities.
The suspect, as well as the two uniformed men who were run over by the car, were taken to hospitals, where the suspect and one of the uniformed men died.
The chief of police in the US capital said that what happened “does not seem to be related to terrorism.
The mobilization of the National Guard and the closure of streets in the area has been reported. Capitol workers have been urged to stay away from windows and find a safe place. It is believed that there were few people in the building due to the Easter weekend.
The attacker of the US Congress complex is Noah Green, 25, from the state of Indiana, reports US television NBC. He was a supporter of the Nation of Islam movement, which advocates for the betterment of African Americans.
Authorities did not describe the attack as a terrorist attack.
On his Facebook page, 25-year-old Noah Green reports that he has lost his job and is seeking spiritual guidance, NBC reports.
The police officer who was killed in the attack near the United States Congress was also reported to have served in the Capitol Police for 18 years.
President Joe Biden issued a statement emphasizing that he and First Lady Jill Biden were devastated by the news of the attack, the BBC reported. Joe Biden also ordered the White House flags lowered in half in honor of the dead police officer.
