Serbia had a great game and drew 2: 2 at home against Group A favorites Portugal. The guests ended the first half with a wonderful 2: 0 lead after goals from Diogo Jota (11, 36). After the break, however, the “eagles” showed their uncompromising spirit and after the blows of Alexander Mitrovic (46) and Filip Kostic (60) came to the point. The hosts had some more advantageous positions, but overall the result was still real. In added time, Nikola Milenković was sent off with a direct red card for a serious offense by the defender against Danilo.
The team’s superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, made a very weak match for Portugal. The forward scored with several mistakes and already in the fourth consecutive game there is no goal for Portugal, with France (0: 1), Croatia (3: 2) and Azerbaijan (1: 0). CR7 last scored in the 7-0 loss over Andorra, scoring the sixth goal of the match. However, in the 94th minute of the match, Ronaldo thought he had scored a goal. However, the referee did not react and the attacker was furious.
Thus, both teams remain at the top of the ranking with 4 points each after their first two games. On Tuesday, the Portuguese will visit Luxembourg and the Serbs in Azerbaijan.
The Portuguese started the game very strongly and silenced their hosts in the 11th minute. Bernardo Silva crossed beautifully from the wing and found Diogo Jota at the far post. The Liverpool forward managed to catch the ball well with his head and give his team an advance – 1: 0.
The best game of the guests continued and in the 36th minute their advantage doubled. Diogo Jota scored his second goal of the match and headed again. The short striker showed great movement without the ball in the penalty area after a precise cross by Cedric Soares from the right wing and again close, who again intercepted with a header for the 2: 0.
At the end of the first half, the most interesting situation was again in front of the Serbs’ gate, after Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to shoot from a free-kick, but sent the ball over the gate.
At half-time, home team coach Dragan Stojkovic put Nemanja Radonic in place to replace Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic, who delivered an almost instantaneous result. Serbia reduced the score in the 46th minute, after Hertha’s wing crossed from the right wing, and Alexander Mitrovic put Fonte and Danilo ahead to head the ball into the net – 1: 2.
The good performances of the Serbs continued in the 55th minute, Dusan Tadic miraculously did not draw. The Ajax star found the volley ball outside the penalty area, but the guest guard killed.
Soon after, Serbia tied. In the 60th minute, the hosts organized a lightning counterattack, in which Radonic made another decisive pass. The winger put Filip Kostic alone against Lopez and calmly slid the ball around the guests’ guard by 2: 2.
In the end, the Serbs had even attempted a complete turnaround. The Portuguese tried to score a third goal after Cristiano Ronaldo’s shots, but the great star of the Iberians was far from his familiar form. In the 75th minute, Cristiano came out from behind the defense, but carelessly missed the ball meters from the door. The Juventus forward was also in an ambush. He then shoots from the edge of the penalty area, but infinitely inaccurate.
The last minutes of the game were especially dramatic. First, in the 1990s, Nikola Milenkovic was sent off with a direct red card for a foul on Danilo. In the third minute of added time, Ronaldo finally came close to a goal, but he was not counted. The forward received a good pass from the left, Dmitrovic hung up and Cristiano managed to direct the ball into goal. Stefan Mitrovic went into the split and managed to kill around the goal line. Ronaldo raised his hands triumphantly, but the head referee didn’t react.
Television replays failed to convince that the ball did not pass with its entire circumference from the goal line. Cristiano was furious and made it clear that he was not happy with the decision. The attacker went even further, throwing the captain’s armband onto the grass. In the end, both teams did not announce a winner and the match ended 2: 2.
