Six people have been charged with participating in a foreign espionage group. This was also written by the press center of the Prosecutor’s Office for the media.
Under the supervision of the Military Appeal Prosecutor’s Office – Sofia, pre-trial proceedings are being carried out for the crimes contemplated in the First Chapter of the Penal Code (Crimes against the Republic).
The preliminary proceedings were initiated for the crimes contemplated in article 109 of the Penal Code (leading and participating in a group for the commission of crimes against the Republic) and in article 104, paragraph 1 of the Penal Code (espionage in favor of a State Foreign). .
The object of the investigation is the activity of Bulgarian citizens – military and officials of various state institutions (Ministry of Defense, Military Information Service, etc.), related to the national security of the country, for which there was data that they collected classified . information for transmission to a foreign country.
On March 18, 2021, after collecting the necessary amount of data on criminal activity, active actions were taken to neutralize its anti-state activity.
A large number of high-intensity investigative actions were carried out, in particular searches and related seizures of personal and business addresses, in which material evidence relevant to the research topic was seized: computers, mobile devices, multiple cards memory and SIM. cards, as well as written documentation relevant to the research topic.
The supervising prosecutors of the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office also participated in the proceedings.
As a result of the investigation, six people were prosecuted. They have been charged with the crimes set forth in article 104, paragraph 1, of the Penal Code (espionage in favor of a foreign state). Five of the individuals have been charged with an offense under article 109, paragraph 2, of the Penal Code (participation in a group for committing offenses under Chapter I), and with respect to one person, the group leader, with a crime of Article 109., paragraph 1 of the Penal Code.
The arrest of five of the people supervised by the supervising prosecutor was ordered for up to 72 hours under art. 64, para. 2 of the PPC, and the presentation of a request for permanent detention will be evaluated. A “bail” measure has been taken against a person who fully cooperates with the investigation.
During the investigation, one of the accused managed to escape. All possible actions for his search were carried out immediately and he was found near the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the capital. The criminal process was initiated under the supervision of the Military Appeal Prosecutor’s Office – Sofia to clarify the above circumstances and possibly the guilty officials.
