SINCE According to the British Office for National Statistics, the symptoms of the new strain of coronavirus, first discovered in Britain, are slightly different from those known so far.
Symptoms such as cough, sore throat, fatigue and pain in the extremities are more common, while loss of the sense of smell and taste, until now considered the most unequivocal symptom of COVID-19, is less common.
The study, conducted among 6,000 randomly selected Britons testing positive for coronavirus, also found that the new mutation caused symptoms such as headaches, shortness of breath, disturbances and vomiting, according to Deutsche Welle.
The new strain is much more contagious
Dr. Christoph Specht, a physician and medical publicist, says in this regard that, based on the results of this study, the individual cannot yet determine for himself whether he is infected with the new or the old strain.
“If I lose my sense of smell tomorrow, it most likely means that I have contracted the known variant of the coronavirus. But it does not rule out the possibility of contracting a virus of the new strain. And vice versa. The differences are too small,” warns e – r Specht.
Mutations in the virus are due to changes in its genetic code. Some of these changes make the virus more dangerous, increasing, for example, the chances that it will be transmitted from one carrier to another.
The new strain, discovered in the UK, listed under the designation B.1.1.7, transmits between 30% and 70% faster than previously known, experts say.
We still don’t know if the mutation is more deadly
There are also suggestions that this mutation in the coronavirus leads to death more often than in previous variants. But for now at least, these claims are based on unreliable data, experts warn.
In mid-January, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson caused a stir with one of his statements about the high mortality caused by the new strain. So the scientific community reacts critically.
This reaction is shared by Dr. Specht, who believes that it is still too early for such conclusions.
