This clarification is contained in a statement from the agency on the occasion of a death control in Austria, where a vaccine from this batch was administered to a patient who later died. The agency notes that so far there is no evidence that death has occurred from a side effect not mentioned in the vaccine insert.

It is added that in Austria two cases of thrombosis were initially detected during vaccination with doses from that batch. In the second case, the vaccinated person recovers from a pulmonary embolism, and in the first case death occurred 10 days after immunization.

As of yesterday, the agency received two more reports of thrombosis after vaccination of the flock in question. It should be noted that, in addition to Austria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Luxembourg have also decided to stop using vaccines from the batch.

The lot contains a total of 1 million doses distributed in 17 countries. Although the case is unlikely to be of low batch quality, the investigation is ongoing, the statement read. The agency added that so far the AstraZeneca vaccine has received 22 reports of thrombosis among 3 million people immunized with the drug in the EU and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. It is added that the inspection has not been completed.
