Clashes between police and citizens broke out after police fined a family for walking in the park. Those present tried to protect the family from the heavy fines. It turns out that police harassed and were other civilians during the day during routine controls for compliance with measures against the coronavirus, according to the portal “Keep Tolking Grease.”
People contacted opposition lawmakers who formally demanded the resignation of the Minister of Civil Protection, who is responsible for police conduct.
Some media tried to present the case as an attack on a police station, while most of the televisions broadcast a video with the real events and the injured citizens, reports BNR.
It all started around 3pm when the police approached two families sitting on the benches. The police threatened them with arrests and speedy legal proceedings, if they did not continue walking, they were not allowed to sit on the benches. Some young people protest against the behavior of the police.
Soon more police officers on motorcycles surrounded the area and detained the youths. Tensions rose and the police detained about 11 people.
The video, which shows police cruelty towards a citizen who is actually trying to talk to police officers when brutally attacked by them, flooded social media and sparked a wave of outrage.
Currently, more than a thousand residents of the Athens neighborhood are outside yelling: “Get the police out of here now.”
The police director has ordered an immediate investigation into the case.
