The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry expressed surprise at the position of two US Senate officials, who expressed concern that relations between Washington and Sofia would be threatened by corruption in Bulgaria.
According to the ministry, the position expressed by the United States does not correspond to the bilateral relations that the two countries have built.
The Foreign Ministry clarified that they had received guarantees that the opinion expressed was in no way formally linked to the position of the White House and that it would not affect the electoral campaign in Bulgaria.
The ministry recalls that years ago Sofia and Washington signed a declaration on bilateral relations, as well as an agreement to improve and deepen the interstate partnership. Subsequently, a series of strategic talks took place in the field of foreign policy.
Relations between the United States and Bulgaria have never been more active, the Foreign Ministry said. At the end of last year, a memorandum of cooperation in the field of 5G technologies was signed.
We remind you that earlier in the day two members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee came out with a blunt position on the situation in the country.
In his view, persistent corruption, questionable rule of law, and lack of media freedom seriously threaten relations between the United States and Bulgaria.
The statement also recalled protests against Borissov’s cabinet in the summer of 2020, which again highlighted corruption as a key argument.
