At least 18 protesters were killed by security forces in Myanmar today, the 30th day of protests against the military coup in the country on February 1, Reuters reported, citing a human rights group, BTA reported.

Yesterday, the other countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations called on the military to exercise restraint and offered to help find a way out of the crisis in Myanmar. Yet the military junta seems more determined than ever to quell the protests. According to eyewitnesses, the security forces fired live ammunition in several cities today.

At least 40 people have died in Myanmar after the army overthrew the de facto civilian government headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, the “icon” of the country’s struggle for democracy. The DPA reported nearly 1,300 detainees in connection with the coup. The UN Security Council will discuss the situation in the country in Southeast Asia, possibly in a closed-door session on Friday.
