There are more cars in Sofia than the average for large cities in the EU, according to an analysis by the municipal company “Sofiaplan”, BNR reported. The trend is that car traffic in the capital continues to grow, while public transport trips are declining.

In the municipality of Sofia there are almost 0.8 cars per adult, while the average level for large cities in the European Union is around 0.5 percent, according to statistics.

According to the latest data on newly registered and canceled cars, the level of motorization has risen from more than 500 cars per 1,000 people at the end of 2016 to more than 660 in 2020, an increase of almost 30%.

By comparison, many of the major European cities have motorization levels below 450 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, according to a report by the Sofia Plan on the state of transport infrastructure in the municipality of Sofia.

It was prepared within the framework of the preparation of the “Program for Sofia”, the new plan for the integrated development of the municipality of Sofia for the next seven years. The report also shows that car traffic in Sofia continues to grow, while public transport trips are declining.
