The United States has announced that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved the murder of journalist Jamal Hashoghi in 2018.

Unlike his predecessor, Donald Trump, President Joe Biden declassified a report by US officials on the case. The Saudi dissident was particularly brutally murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul after going there to obtain marriage documents.

A US services document says Mohammed bin Salman gave the green light to the assassination of Jamal Hashoghi, a fierce critic of the kingdom’s government. For the first time, the United States has publicly stated that the prince was involved in the murder, something he denies. Riyadh’s version is that the murder took place without the knowledge of the royal family, something Western services consider impossible.

After the disappearance of Jamal Hashoghi, Saudi Arabia denied for days that there had been a murder at the consulate. Later, under external pressure, the Saudi Arabs confessed to the murder, but according to Riyadh, it was committed without the knowledge of Mohammed bin Salman. In the course of the investigation, it became clear that Jamal Hashoghi’s body had been dismembered. It was never found and, according to Turkish services, the assassins sent from Riyadh did their best to cover their tracks. Donald Trump has refused to acknowledge that Salman has a role to play, due to his strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia and Washington’s financial interests.
