Final: we notify the traffic police to cancel us as owner when we sell the car

Owners will be able to notify the traffic police to cancel their registration when they sell their car. This was unanimously decided by the deputies, after accepting in both readings in today’s session the change in the Road Traffic Law, proposed by a group of GERB deputies headed by Krassimir Tsipov.

With the change, sellers will be able to protect their rights and the change in ownership will be reflected in motor vehicle records. As he wrote “24 hours”, this mainly applies to transactions before December 27, 2017, when the requirement was introduced that the new owner of the car register it with the Traffic Police within two months, otherwise it is stopped. Before that date, there was no such requirement and there were several cases where a car was sold but the owner was not changed. This change allows the seller to deliver to the Traffic Police a copy of the document that proves the transfer of the vehicle, and thus be canceled as owner, and then the registration of the vehicle is terminated ex officio. This practically means that the car will stop moving. The seller will receive a certificate containing information on the date of transfer of ownership and the official completion date of the registration.

Data will be entered about the buyer of the vehicle, the number and date of the ownership transfer document, and for the new owner to drive the car, they will need to re-register it in their own name.
