Last year alone, more than 9,000 citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia received Bulgarian citizenship by origin and 25,000 applied for it. Thus, the Macedonian citizens who received Bulgarian citizenship exceed 140,000, and if we count those who wait, it is probably about 200,000. This is almost 10% of the inhabitants of RSM, almost 20% of those who are not Albanian, Wallachian, Turkish, Roma or Serbian.
This was announced by the MEP and vice president of the European People’s Party, Andrey Kovachev, reports BGNES.
“All of these people have become Bulgarian citizens based on two key circumstances. The first is that they have proven that their grandparents were ethnic Bulgarians. The second is that they have explicitly stated that they feel Bulgarian. Probably among these 200,000 Bulgarian citizens. there are some who are not sincere in their Bulgarian feelings, they took Bulgarian documents in order to enjoy the advantages of the European Bulgarian passport, issued by the hated “Tartarus-Bulgaria”.
They did it out of opportunism, because such are the “surroundings”, as the surrealist and president, Mr. Pendarovski, would say. “These ‘opportunists’ have lied by filling out false statements that they feel Bulgarian,” wrote Kovace, emphasizing: “These people must bear their legal responsibility in Bulgaria, and the shame in Macedonia of being de facto traitors to the current official doctrine that “They have nothing to do with the Bulgarians.”
“However, according to my personal observations, there are many more people who do the exact opposite: precisely because they are opportunists and realistic, they cannot clearly admit in RSM that they have Bulgarian citizenship.” They are well aware that being Bulgarian in Macedonia is still a heavy burden, and even a sentence that closes the door to their professional, social and political development.
They are also realistic to hide their connection to mother Bulgaria and the Bulgarian identity declared by them, some of them even publicly spew out the fiercest anti-Bulgarian rhetoric and propaganda. I know these people personally: there are current and former politicians, both from the left and the right, there are unsuccessful political candidates, senior government officials, businessmen, journalists, public figures, there are all kinds, “wrote Kovachev.
