Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny defended himself today when he appeared in court charged with insulting a World War II veteran after the trial was interrupted last week due to the plaintiff’s health problems, DPA reported, cited by BTA.
Navalny told the judge that she was chosen for the case because she was the most unscrupulous judge in the world and that she should go back to school to better familiarize herself with Russian law.
The trial began on February 5. Navalny denies the allegations and says the case is politically motivated.
His attorney described the trial as another attempt to silence his client.
The veteran, who according to the opposition is only a “puppet” in the trial, did not appear in court today. The 94-year-old’s lawyer read his biography for 20 minutes and pointed out his military exploits, and Navalny objected that it had nothing to do with the case.
Several witnesses were called to testify against Navalny at today’s hearing. However, whoever wanted to testify in his defense was initially banned.
Navalny complained that the old man had been deliberately left outside at a temperature of minus 15 degrees Celsius and harshly criticized the court.
If found guilty in the case, a critic of the Kremlin could be fined, sentenced to forced labor or jailed.
