Dr. Dancho Penchev: Sofia is back in the red zone, we can return the restrictions

Sofia has once again entered the red zone in terms of the number of people infected with coronavirus. The situation becomes alarming and tense. What worries us is the gradual increase in hospitalizations, “said SRZI director Dancho Penchev in” Tazi Sutrin. “

“Yesterday there was a meeting with Prof. Angelov with the heads of large hospitals. The gradual increase in hospitalizations in the city of Sofia begins. The measures were relaxed before receiving this information. For the moment, the loosening is carefully refined. Only a few shopping malls and gyms were opened. Restaurants will not be open for now. We await the development of morbidity, which will give us indications of what we will do, “Penchev said.

It is absolutely possible that the measures will be tightened again if the incidence reaches about 600 per 100,000 people, said the director of SRZI.

“For now, the decision to return children to school will not be reconsidered. We still have a principle of rotation: this is a new measure that we are implementing with the Ministry of Education,” Penchev said.

In the last week, SRZI has conducted 200 inspections of restaurants, shopping centers, and gyms. 21 minutes have been drawn up, said Penchev, who noted that the inspection staff of 242 people is insufficient to enforce the control, but when they receive a signal of non-compliance with the restrictions, they react immediately.

There is no evidence that a new mutation of the British variant of the coronavirus has been recorded in Bulgaria. On the territory of Sofia, tests for the British virus are carried out at “Pirogov” and at the National Reference Laboratory. According to the data this morning in “Pirogov” with 103 positive samples, 43 are with the British version of the virus. These are people who have not left the country soon, Penchev said.

It is worrying that the virus is “rejuvenating” and affecting people in younger age groups, said the director of SRZI.

Penchev announced that he had been immunized and that he had learned about the choice of the vaccine from the brochures, which indicated that the research on the preparations was still ongoing. The SRHI director noted that in the spring there will be enough vaccines to choose from. The European Medicines Agency does not see any problem in administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to older people, and our regulator is still discussing the case.

Dr. Penchev said he did not believe he made a mistake in lifting the quarantines of the president and the prime minister. He resigned for personal reasons, since his mother had passed away and he had returned to his position as director of the SRHI at the insistence of his colleagues.
