Any information regarding National Security Service cars, including the jeep in which Prime Minister Boyko Borissov travels across the country live on Facebook, is strictly secret. This comes from the NSO’s response to a question under the Access to Public Information Act.
“Sega” asked to know how many cars Toyota, the Sequoia model has in the civil service fleet and how many security guards were driven over them. However, it turns out that the NSO does not have the right to reply due to the Classified Information Protection Law, which establishes that “data on the type, level of supply and quality of special equipment, weapons, ammunition, protective equipment, devices and materials used by security services, as well as data on their operational work, constitute classified information ”.
“Given that with the cars at your disposal, NSO performs a significant part of its operational work as a security service, taking into account that they are part of our special equipment, as well as the specified regulations, we cannot provide data on the type, brands and models of cars with which we provide security ”, is said in the denial under the APIA of the head of the service Brigadier General Emil Tonev.
With the same argument, NSO does not provide information on the kilometers traveled by Toyota SUVs in 2020, the fuel they have consumed, as well as their monetary value. “The natural continuation of our motives is that we cannot provide statistics on the distance traveled, fuel consumption and, consequently, its value by make and model of car, because this information is classified,” reads the negative. Even the summary statistics on consumables for the operation and maintenance of the entire fleet turned out to be secret, as the NSO notes that it is also an official secret.
Thus, in practice, the Bulgarian taxpayer is unaware of the cost of Prime Minister Borissov’s tours of the country, which have no other purpose than political public relations, especially before the next parliamentary elections. His jeep tour, which is streamed live on Facebook, became popular during the MEP vote in 2019, when the prime minister was campaigning from the NSO car.
The work of Air Squadron 28, which has two government planes and two helicopters, seems much more transparent. Last year, the planes made 60 flights within the borders of Bulgaria and 26 outside the country, writes in response to the APIA to the newspaper “NOW”. The helicopters have flown 34 times and traveled 16,465 km. This statistic also includes training flights, technical flights, as well as flights for technical team flights. The fuel consumed by the helicopters of Air Detachment 28 is 56,346 liters worth 44,498 BGN, which is unknown how it produces less than BGN per liter.
In 2020, 66 officials flew on government planes. As is known, another favorite place for live broadcasts on the Prime Minister’s Facebook profile is the helicopter Helicopter 28. With it, Borisov flew over Turkish Stream several times in Bulgaria to show it to various officials, as well as over the road under construction . “Hemus”.
