For more than a year since the coronavirus took over our lives, scientists have been trying to identify those circumstances that have made COVID-19 particularly aggressive in terms of mortality and spread.

A group of scientists from the University of Illinois has concluded that two are the main factors that make COVID-19 the most deadly and contagious. According to them, temperature and latitude are interrelated and play an important role in the number of new infections and mortality rates from the new coronavirus.
The researchers used one of the initial hypotheses for the spread of the virus, namely that it is more aggressive at low temperatures, which explains its current virulence in the northern hemisphere, especially in Europe. On the other hand, the researchers recall, its strength decreases significantly when summer arrives in Europe and temperatures begin to rise.
One of the conclusions we reached is that the virus is likely to remain seasonal, as is the case with the flu, explained Gustavo Caetano-Anoyes, one of the study participants.
The researchers took into account data from 221 countries, which contained the spread of the virus, mortality rates, cured patients, active cases and hospitalized until April 15 of last year. The study is expected to be published in the scientific journal Evolutionary Bioinformatics.
