Former UDF cabinet military minister Georgi Ananiev has died. The sad news was announced by former deputy minister and iconic figure of the UDF Zdravko Zafirov on his Facebook account.

“With sincere sorrow, I inform you that former Defense Minister Georgi Ananiev has died. A wonderful, modest, hard-working man and friend, rest in peace, friend. Beware of people! Kovid does not forgive!” Zafirov wrote.

Who was Georgi Ananiev?


Georgi Ananiev was born on April 12, 1950 in the village of Kosacha, Radomir region. He graduated from the Pernik Technical School of Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering and the Sofia Institute of Mining and Geology (1974). He then worked as an engineer in various companies, including the Heavy Machinery Plant in Radomir.

In early 1992, Ananiev became deputy governor of the Sofia region and, later that year, deputy defense minister for Military Economic Affairs under the government of Filip Dimitrov. After his dismissal in 1993 he was an official in the administration of the Sofia region, and in 1994 he was elected a member of the Union of Democratic Forces in the 37th National Assembly, where he was a member of the National Security Committee.

In February 1997, Georgi Ananiev was appointed Defense Minister in the office of Stefan Sofiyanski and remained in this position in the government of Ivan Kostov.

In late 1999, Ananiev was removed from the government and appointed to the newly created post of Secretary of Defense to President Petar Stoyanov.
