Elena Yoncheva
In Bulgaria, where the rule of law is under constant threat, citizens eagerly await the work of the EPPO, it is a symbol of hope. In this sense, when will the actual activity start? This was asked by Elena Yoncheva, MEP from the group of Socialists and Democrats, the chief European prosecutor Laura Coveschi during the meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on Tuesday.
I also wanted to know how the work of the prosecution, which will deal with many cases, is organized to ensure the protection of the European budget. Elena Yoncheva also asked about the cooperation agreement recently signed with Europol: whether the two institutions will work together on specific cases or exchange information. This was announced by the Elena Yoncheva press center.
“I would like to start work tomorrow,” Laura Coveschi said. We have done everything in our power, we are prepared, but not all the European delegated prosecutors have yet been appointed. Some countries have not started the procedure, others are ongoing and will be completed in February, he added. Laura Coveschi announced that the EPPO will sign agreements with both OLAF and Eurojust to establish close cooperation with them, in addition to Europol, both in the exchange of information and in data analysis and training. He expects the EPPO to handle about 2,000 cases a year.
My job is to ensure that European prosecutors are truly independent from national authorities, Laura Coveschi promised.
In the discussion, Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders commented: “We need to ensure that organized crime does not benefit from the European budget and the recovery fund.” It is important for us that the EPPO starts work earlier, he said. According to Didier Reynders, the possibility of using funding more quickly and flexibly by Member States increases the risk, so the EPPO will play an important role. It must ensure that every euro is spent in dealing with the crisis.
