Thieves adapt to the crisis of the crown: they are transferred from real estate to movable property.
The coronavirus has reduced home thefts because people are constantly at home, but police have warned that thefts of car parts and belongings in Sofia are on the rise.
Bulgarian car thieves rank first in Europe in terms of capacity, performance and speed, BNT writes.
In our country, the majority of German and Japanese cars are on the rise, and Interior Ministry data for 2020 shows a decline in the middle class and an increase of around 5 percent in new luxury cars.
Lyuba Pranchova parked her car in the local lane on Tsarigradsko Shosse Blvd. She learns from a passing police patrol that the car was mugged.
“We welded our car with a broken window. The only thing that could have been stolen from our car was the radio,” said Lyuba Pranchova.
It turns out that cars often break down here, and in the most frequent cases, residents share on a neighborhood Facebook group.
“At least 5-6 people recently wrote what happened to them. Laptops if someone left a phone. Someone had written that pennies had been stolen from their car,” said Lyuba Pranchova.
In addition to belongings, car catalyst thefts are also becoming more common. The device converts some of the most toxic substances released by the engine into more harmless components. The second-hand price can reach 300 BGN.
The catalyst also contains a thin layer of precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, the price of which is increasing dramatically.
Last year, the SDVR reported a drop in auto theft of around 15 percent. Every day, two drivers in Sofia run out of their cars. Thieves mainly attack middle-class cars. It turns out that new protections and technologies are not a problem for Bulgarian groups.
Middle-class cars are disassembled into parts, most often in the vicinity of Sofia. For the newer and more luxurious cars, theft is planned in advance and done to order. Technologies are used to intercept the signal from the car key.
“There are two devices. It transmits the signal to the person next to the car with another device and so the car recognizes that it is as if the original key was next to it and opens and starts the car. A car with such the device can stealing literally in seconds, less than 10 seconds, “said SDVR’s Hristo Trendafilov.
Traces are quickly erased, since registration documents are prepared in advance; a duplicate car is also used.
“The identification number is removed after the theft and in its place the number of this registration is adjusted, which is usually a total. A car imported from abroad in Bulgaria. With these documents and the intervention on the frame, this car is registered in the Traffic Police, “said Hristo Trendafilov of SDVR.
The duplicate car usually sells for half the price. The set of forged documents illegally costs around BGN 2,000. In 2020, the Interior Ministry destroyed several landfills in the Sofia region, where cars are dismantled and duplicates are made.
