The pantheon of Bulgarian soldiers killed in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885 near Slivnitsa is sinking into ruin. Built through the 13th century Bulgaria Foundation with donations from the grateful Bulgarian people, as the memorial plaque says, to commemorate one of the greatest manifestations of Bulgarian patriotism, today it is sadly neglected, reports Bulgaria ON AIR.

Even the gloomy January day on Saturday didn’t look gray enough against the red concrete bulge. The steps are crumbling, in some places they are broken. The impressive pantheon is made of red reinforced concrete and is shaped like a truncated pyramid. In its central part there is a quartzite statue of a woman, symbolizing Mother Bulgaria, grieving for her lost children, reports BGNES.

A curious fact is that the Colossi of Memnon in Egypt, as well as Napoleon’s sarcophagus at the Home for the Disabled in Paris, are made of quartzite. According to known data, the quartzite for the pantheon was donated by Russia. Visitors once read the names of fallen military commanders on bronze plaques, but after years of oblivion and usurpation, only ordinary aluminum tables are found today.

In the nearby village of Gurguliat, time seems to have stopped. And the road is desperately broken. Either around the time of the pandemic or in the winter in this part of Bulgaria, it is so, but there is no living soul on the streets. The city council has a phone number in case anyone needs it. The battles that took place 135 years ago in the territory of Slivnitsa are a military defense of the Union of Bulgaria.
