In Pazardzhik, a baby was born with antibodies against COVID-19. The single case was reported by the city hospital. The baby was born after the mother was treated for the coronavirus.
This is an unprecedented case not only for the city, but also for the scientific community. Until now it was thought that during pregnancy the mother could not transmit the coronavirus to the baby in her womb, but in Pazardzhik hospital, doctors found exactly the opposite. Their data is based on an antigen test performed on the baby.
A six-month-old baby was discharged after treatment with COVID-19
Jordanka Brandiyska, 28, contracted the coronavirus two months before giving birth.
“I started coughing. At night I had a slight temperature: 37.5. I called Dr. Ivan Kitov and he recommended that I do a PCR test or a rapid test,” he said.
Dr. Kitov, who monitors the woman’s pregnancy, noticed something unusual in the development of the fetus after infecting the mother. “There was a delay in the fetus, that is, reducing its development in terms of weight and length.” The amniotic fluid has also been reduced, “he said.

Because there was a risk to the fetus, the doctors decided to deliver the baby by cesarean section two weeks before the due date. The girl was born healthy. After several tests, including a blood test and an antigen test, doctors found something unusual.
“We isolated and detected IgG antibodies, the IgM were negative. We talked to everyone in the room that it was probably transplacental antibodies, ”said Dr. Zdravka Pirovona, head of the Department of Neonatology at Pazardzhik Hospital.
“Wherever you look today, the tide of protectionist sentiment is flowing. One of the studies cited 112 cases where there was no transmission, but the clinic plus the antibodies showed the baby had gotten sick in the womb,” said Dr. Ilian Trayanov, head of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Pazardzhik Hospital.

“I am very surprised and I have no explanation of how this could happen, how the virus passed through the placenta so that the baby could have antibodies,” says the mother. He added: “We are about to do another quantitative antibody test on the child.”
Currently, the 28-year-old woman and her little girl are in excellent condition and at home.
