The United States Congress resumed its session after the attack on its building by Trump supporters, the Associated Press reported.
More than six hours after storming supporters of incumbent President Donald Trump against the Capitol in Washington, the Senate has resumed the debate on Republican objections to the election victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the November presidential election.
Several US congressmen and 13 senators tried to challenge the votes in the six-state electoral college that supported Biden. Three Republican senators, who initially challenged voters’ votes, said they were withdrawing their objections after the Capitol raid and clashes between protesters and police.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican, said Congress “will not hesitate” to approve the election results. He said the protesters tried to thwart democracy, but failed.
McConnell intends to continue the Senate session on Wednesday until the results are approved.
The House of Representatives also met to continue the process of approving the election results. Its president, Nancy Pelosi, said Biden’s claim would show the world that Congress would not bow. “Despite today’s shameful actions, we will still do it, we will be part of a story that will show the world what America is made of,” Pelosi said.
