Traffic police issued more than 5,000 criminal warrants on December 31 and January 1. The driving licenses of 161 drivers were confiscated, Chief Inspector Lachezar Bliznakov of the traffic police announced at a briefing on the expected increase in traffic at the end of the weekend.

“Our observations are that due to the many days off, the traffic is evenly distributed among all these days,” Bliznakov said.

More than 400 police teams on the country’s roads are standing by 24 hours a day for a safe return after the holidays.

In just two days, on December 31 and January 1, more than 5,000 minutes and receipts were issued. During the same period, 161 drivers were deprived of their licenses. More than 80 people have been caught driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.


“As an example, I will give a case from today. At approximately 11 o’clock in one of the exits in Sofia, during a routine inspection, a case of alcohol consumption by a driver was found and the device reported 2.72 per thousand ”, explained Lachezar Bliznakov.

Traffic police reported a decrease in accidents compared to the Christmas season at the end of last year: 46 fewer accidents, 69 fewer injuries and three deaths.

Control authorities expect the number of road casualties to continue to decline in the new year.
