Kalina Kalcheva, resident of Varna STAFF: BNT
Kalina Kalcheva from Varna has been searching for an answer to the question for years: how to build a human base on the Red Planet. The work is serious – Kalina participates in the NASA – MARS 25 competition. And she was chosen among the semifinalists, in competition with teams from around the world, BNT reported.
The challenges of life as we know it are numerous when you are on Mars.
“The temperature limits there are very sharp, very wide ranges. Then the sandstorms, the lack of a normal atmosphere, the high radiation,” says Kalina Kalcheva, who is a designer-architect.
According to Kalina and her team, the refuge on Mars should be built in a cave that provides natural protection against harsh conditions.
The structure is designed as a known alloy scaffold in rocketry, covered with inflatable is practically the use of alloy scaffold, proven to be stable in rockets, to be covered with inflatable modules.
“And creating within this space, this is the hardest part, in my opinion, to create an artificial environment, which resembles as much as possible what people are used to,” said Kalina Kalcheva.
Kalina Kalcheva says that space has sparked her imagination since she was a child. She is the daughter of the pilot. His interests are diverse: he graduated in design in Varna and specialized in architecture in Germany. But he manages to combine his hobby with his profession on the Mars base project.
“In the early stages it wasn’t even the base itself. I was just playing with forms, I was playing with volumes,” said Kalina Kalcheva.
After being admitted to the semifinals of the NASA competition, Kalina became part of the University of Mars and received lectures related to the challenges of the planet every two weeks. Whether Kalina and her team will make it to the final of the competition will be clear by the end of the month.
