The Pentagon has decided to postpone full fifth-generation fighter-bomber production. F-35 indefinitelyWrites Bloomberg.
The agency clarified that the US military is not yet ready to report when it will be ready for combat trials, which are postponed from 2017.
The tests were scheduled for December 2020. According to Pentagon Deputy Chief of Staff Ellen Lord, they were canceled due to “technical problems” and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
A decision on mass production must be made before March this year. A new date will be set based on independent technical knowledge.
More than 600 of the 3,200 potential F-35 fighters have already been delivered, and the military is using the fighter in nine countries, including the US Air Force and Marine Corps.
But it has not yet proven its effectiveness against the most challenging Russian and Chinese air defense systems and assets. This must be done in a sophisticated ground simulator at the Maryland Naval Air Force Base.
