British tourists escaped at night from a Swiss ski resort

Hundreds of tourists who should be in quarantine due to the new strain of coronavirus have fled in the middle of the night from the Swiss ski resort of Verbier, which is especially popular with the British. Some of them turned up later in France, Jean-Marc Sandos, a spokesman for the municipality of Ban, which includes Verbier, told DPA.

Swiss authorities have registered 420 Britons in quarantine before Christmas. About 50 of them left immediately, and of the other 370, only 10 remain to date, Sandos said. “We understand your anger,” he added.

The spokesperson harshly criticized the hasty and retrospective requirements for those arriving from the UK. “Families with young children were suddenly blocked in 20 square meters. This is intolerable,” he added.

Those who went to France will find that the ski resorts are down due to local quarantine measures. But at least there they won’t be locked up in their hotels and lodgings, like in Switzerland.

Japan bans entry until the end of January

Switzerland suspended all flights from the UK (as well as South Africa) on December 20 due to the discovery of a new, more highly contagious variant of the coronavirus. On December 21, authorities ordered that all those who had arrived since December 14 be quarantined for 10 days from the date of arrival.

Meanwhile, several Austrian ski resorts have announced that they are tightening measures against the coronavirus after the influx of tourists over the weekend. The sunny weather on Saturdays and Sundays drew large crowds of people.

“Overall it’s great. The masks aren’t very comfortable, but it’s fun to be outside! I didn’t expect there to be so many people, but everything is arranged and I’m not scared,” said skier Kevin Schmid.

Nikolova: The control will be inflexible, it is important that everyone follows the measures.

Many ski resorts in Austria are currently open, but most places can only be visited by locals, as a 10-day quarantine is in effect for those arriving from abroad. A third closure is in effect in the country, but the government has allowed resorts to open on December 24. The authorities believe that, as an outdoor sport, skiing is completely safe if all precautions are taken.

Hundreds also headed to the German winter resorts on the weekend after Christmas to enjoy the snow. And this despite the efforts of the authorities to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“I didn’t see anyone wearing a mask. Maybe scarves, but no masks. We went down a side street and we didn’t see many people, but when we met everyone kept their distance,” said one of the resort staff.

Germany is among the European countries that have decided, at least at this stage, not to open their ski resorts.
